  3.         Comet 3.0, The Cornell Macintosh Terminal Emulator

  5.    Comet 3.0B3 is the latest version of Comet, available from
  6.    ftp.cit.cornell.edu in the /pub/mac/comm/test directory.  Comet, the
  7.    Cornell Macintosh Terminal Emulator, may be freely used as long as
  8.    the restrictions in the copyright notice in the "About Comet..."
  9.    menu item are observed.

  11.    UPGRADE/INSTALLATION NOTE:  To ensure that keyboard mapping works
  12.    correctly, you need to copy the "Comet keyboard-No Diacritics"
  13.    keyboard layout into your System.  This resource has changed in
  14.    order to avoid a bug which sometimes occurs when Comet is used in
  15.    conjunction with Word and Excel.

  17.    Comet is a full-featured Macintosh Terminal Emulator offering up to
  18. 16 windows with fast color emulations of the Heath H19, Digital
  19. VT102, or IBM 3278-{2,3,4,5} in 9, 12, 16, 24, and 36 point font
  20. sizes.  Serial and MacTCP connections are supported (3270 emulation is
  21. available over MacTCP only; a similar ASCII interface is supported with
  22. a Heath-19 terminal emulation through the IBM 7171).  As of yet the
  23. Comm Toolbox is not supported.

  25.    Comet uses Macintosh documents to store configuration information on
  26. each session.  Each Comet terminal session has an a scrollback buffer
  27. with scrollbars on the emulator window and an associated TextEdit window,
  28. the ".edit window," which can be used to edit text (which can be made
  29. upload/download target window with automatic line wrapping/unwrapping),
  30. to compose and execute macros, and to log session data (as an
  31. alternative to using the scrollback buffer).  A Find command allows you
  32. to search either the .edit window or the scrollback buffer.  Print,
  33. Copy, and Paste are supported; Comet also supports session logging to
  34. disk.

  36.    Comet supports macros and macro recording.  A macro can be associated
  37. with a key or a mouse double click; Comet can execute a macro when a
  38. connection is opened or closed to allow automatic access to
  39. Telnet servers.  Key macros may be up to 10K in length; the scripting
  40. language offers a match-string function to wait for host output so that
  41. macros can execute reliably.

  43.    On-line documentation can be viewed and searched using a .edit
  44. window.  Note especially that many functions in Comet are available
  45. only as key macro settings, e.g., disabling cursor positioning for
  46. the ASCII terminals.  Configuring these options in a Connection macro
  47. will allow you to permanently configure one of these options for
  48. a session.

  50.    File transfer support is somewhat limited, including a locally
  51. developed IBM mainframe protocol for serial and network connections
  52. (ft3270) and a TFTP server for users connected to a TCP/IP network.
  53. Serial transfer for ASCII emulators is not supported.  Comet supports
  54. automatic local printing of downloaded files with special name
  55. extensions (e.g., ".print").

  57.    Comet functions with standard UNIX vt102 termcaps (an "stty rows nn
  58. columns nn" in your .login is needed to reconfigure the screen size) and
  59. performs well with VMS on Digital mainframes also.  VT100 windows can be
  60. up to 32K in total text area, e.g., 100 rows X 320 columns.

  62.    The IBM emulations specifically support the extended character set
  63. used by the NOTIS library card catalog system; Comet supports printing
  64. of this character set when the Comet-fonts are installed in the Fonts
  65. folder.  A Comet document which maps the keyboard to be nearly
  66. identical to an IBM 3163 with the ALA character set option is included
  67. in the CometExternal distribution.

  69.    The most current version of Comet is available on ftp.cit.cornell.edu
  70. in the directory "/pub/mac/comm/"; the complete Comet package,
  71. including documentation and the IBM host file transfer and 7171 support
  72. files, is available in "/pub/mac/comm/cometExternal/".  The most
  73. current development version is available in "/pub/mac/comm/test/".
